Green, Greener, Greenest

Deciding whether or not to consciously purchase environmentally beneficial products is definitely a step in the right direction.  Those new to “the game” may not realize that there can be different stages of  being green.

Example:

Non-Green purchase – disposable, *chlorine-bleached, coffee filters containing no pre or post-consumer recycled content

Green purchase – natural brown, non *chlorine-bleached,  coffee filters containing no pre or post consumer recycled content

Greener purchase – natural brown, non* chlorine-bleached, coffee filters containing pre or post consumer recycled content

Greenest purchase – permanent hemp coffee filter (According to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, one acre of hemp can produce 4 times more paper than one acre of trees!)  downside: China is currently the prime producer of hemp textile – for more info on hemp: http://www.binhaitimes.com/hemp.html

So there you have it; (at least) three stages of going green.  Baby steps or giant steps;  it’s definitely the consumer’s choice.

*dioxins are released into the environment, which is a by-product of bleaching with chlorine. Dioxin, a bleaching byproduct, is one of the most toxic human-made chemicals. Once released into the environment, it is persistent because natural bacteria cannot effectively break it down. http://encyclopedia.toiletpaperworld.com/?s=organochlorines&x=9&y=10
