How to Freshen Drains

Keeping the drains fresh smelling may seem like a meager chore, but a sour smell from a kitchen sink can permeate the entire house. Seldom used bathroom sinks are often culprits of offensive smells. Vacation home drains left over a period of time may need attending.

To freshen drains, pour a mixture of 1/2 cup baking soda (not baking powder) and 1/4 cup salt down the drain.

Follow with 1 cup of white vinegar; let stand 30 minutes or so. The foaming is a natural reaction between the vinegar and baking soda.

After the 30 minutes,  flush the mixture through the pipes with a gallon of hot water.

Making this a monthly routine will help to keep drains smelling fresh and clog free.
